I Am From

We are learning to describe. I am from is a list about where you live and what happens there.
I found it tricky to find a place for my simile.
I found it easy to describe and use specific nouns.

I am from
A Weatherboard house with a medium-sized backyard a curved gravel driveway a ferocious front lawn, sprinkled with prickles, like flour dusted generously on dough
Rectangular clear pool but with bit of leaves
And a concrete porch with a spiky doormat.

I am from
A warm kitchen with warm smells,
Cold soba, gyoza, and swedish meatballs,
A pantry full of beef stock, uncooked noodles and a variety of spices and condiments,
A fruit bowl with bananas, plums, and old stems,
Cake tins full of cinnamon rolls, brownies, and chocolate crinkles.

I am from
Early morning snuggles, being nicely dressed for church,
and nose diving into the Waikanae waves
Counting victories for Cluedo, Uno and Top Trumps.

I am from
My family and I singing to the top of our lungs to
Taylor Swift, Maroon 5, and Ed Sheeran.
Dancing as I make my lunch, putting my clothes away and putting away the dishes.
CRASH! Sorry Mum!

I am from
“TWO healthy things in your lunch box and ONE SNACK!”
“GET! UP!”
“ Don’t leave your shoes lying around!”
“Can I pway wif your cwomebook? Pweeeaaaassse?”

I am from
Mum and Dad, I brother and 1 sister
The car is the centre
Stories told;lives shared.

The Bungee Run-up

WALT peer assess
Sucess Criteria

  • use some long and short sentences
  • use adjectives and adverbs
  • use juicy verbs to start a sentence
  • use a similie or metaphor
  • keep one main idea in each paragraph
  • edit for spelling and punctuation

Click! Snap! The elastic clipped on. “So.” I started nervously. “ I just run and charge at the foam attached with the velcro?” Of course, I knew what I was doing. Of course I was just stalling. Of course, I wanted to scream and run out of that bouncy run-up. But I just plastered a fake, shiny smile on my face. I stumbled to the back of the bouncy run-up. Charging, my heart pounded against my chest. Feet and hands slipped. Grip. I heard Aliyah sniggering. I heard my brother chanting my name, like my very on cheerleader. Rip! I grabbed the foam piece and breathed a sigh of relief as I slid backwards on my tummy. I felt so proud.

The Endeavour

The hot sun streamed through the clouds as we joined the huge line for tickets of the replica Endeavour. Big cameras with furry microphones seemed to be everywhere! After what seemed like forever, my family, my sister’s godmother, and my friends, Tom, Rylee, Kylie, and Lara had got laminated tickets. Finally! After we snacked on pork buns and gyoza(semi-circled Japanese dumplings) we ordered real fruit ice cream. There was a huge line and it took 30 minutes to receive our ice cream! But, by the time we got our ice cream it was time to get on the replica Endeavour! So, there were two options. We could waste our REAL fruit ice cream by chucking it out on the side, even if it costs a whopping  $6.00!! OR, we could stuff the ice cream in our mouth, risking public humiliation. We chose the second option and gulped it down. Then I got a really bad feeling and almost HURLED! But, fortunately we got to the Endeavour and I was so amazed I gulped everything down. A burst of excitement overtook me as I clambered on the Endeavour. It was like I was taken back into a time machine and went back to the year 1769.Then there were “Ooohh’s” and a lot of “ Aaaahh’s”. (Which really got on my nerves.) Thick, worn ropes climbed up, and up. Slick, black cannons were placed on either sides of the boat. It was hard to believe that James Cook and his crew sailed the world on this! It made me want to hurl thinking about rocking forwards and back, forwards and back,  rocking forwards and back. Again! The crow’s nest was 14 metres tall! The net up to the crow’s nest was on the edges. The sun’s rays poured out and I started to sweat. It was so… HHHOTT! And also, very… HHHOOOTTT!!! Oh, and did I mention… HHHOOOTTT?! A man suddenly motioned for us to come out. Already? The crowd made disappointed groans and filed out. As I looked back at the majestic Endeavour, a new memory was complete.

The Dance

This piece of writing is actually true, and I got so shocked!
I did a little bit of tweaking, because the music person let me redo it.
Our success criteria was to use..

  • Juicy verbs
  • Specific nouns
  • Adjectives
  • Begin a sentence with a juicy verb/specific noun/adjective x4
  • Link beginning and end

The audience claps for the first performer. Silence. Then, a bell jingles. I take a deep breath then exhale. Breathe, I think. Just do your best. My palms tingle with sweat as I skip out on the worn, black, desolate stage. Giving myself a pep talk, I think, fake it till you make it. Suddenly, the music plays. My body jolts with adrenaline. I start my routine, unprepared. I finish my dance, and  the audience gives a roar of applause. Exhausted, I skip back out into the wings, the bell sounds once more.

Speeches

This week we presented our speeches.
My heart pounded so hard, it felt as if it was trying to rip out of my chest.
We had to use...

  • A clear voice
  • Stand still
  • Speak loudly
  • Go at our own pace
  • Look up at the crowd
  • Use expression
  • Be confident
Our speeches needed to include a rhetorical question and needed to be persuasive.
My speech was on Climate change.
You can read it in my previous post.

My Favourite Coat

This a piece of writing from Term 1. At that time we were writing about our favourite clothing. I really enjoyed writing about this because I really did adore this coat. I found it hard to take a picture of it, but I ended up holding it up with a coat hanger.

I remember wearing my Spanish white coat. It was like Cruella De Vil’s spotless coat, bouncing up and down, and floating gracefully. It was soft, and smelt like laundry detergent mixed with  fresh air. It had snuggly sleeves just like a fleece blanket. It had a black velvet ribbon that clipped in the middle with a button. It was finished off with  pearly, white, iridescent, buttons. I wore it every time  we went to church, or any special occasion, you would see me wearing it. I always felt like a sophisticated model from Haute Couture Fashion show wearing it.

I remember the day when my mum pulled it out of my drawer and told me it was too small. I was determined to change her mind so I put it on.
“ Yup, it fits!” I insisted. But no matter what, I couldn’t change her mind.
The ends of the sleeves were up to my elbows, and the long coat now came above my knees. I was mad and disappointed. I just couldn’t believe this was the end of the memories that lived inside my spotless Cruella De Vil coat.

Winter

In Room One we are learning to use similes and personification.
Similes compare things using the words as or like. I enjoyed describing the nouns. I found it tricky to match my verbs and adjectives.

Outside on the field, frosty grass fizzed and crunched under my numb toes. The sky froze and the wind howled and pushed my back. My warm breath blew out steam like a puff of a mini cloud. Rain trickled down the back of my head as soon as I got inside.
