For WDICF we finished our FINAL Inquiry. For my topic, I did "The Psychology of Advertising & Marketing." 
This topic has always interested me, and I was really excited to do this topic.
I don't think this was my best inquiry but I enjoyed researching it.

Child labour in the Fashion Industry

In my most previous post, The Cultural Impact of Progress on Indigenous Peoples (click here if you want to read it), I talked about my class "Where Did it Come From?"
After we did a choice inquiry, where we could choose from the following topics;
  • Meat & the environment
  • Hygiene Disposable Products (baby wipes etc)
  • Fast Fashion
  • Child labour
  • Blood Diamonds
I chose a combination of child labour and fast fashion because those two topics already intertwine.
I actually think this is the BEST inquiry I've ever done. The only thing I would change about my WeVideo is to try to make each recording perfect because I had some stutters in it. I think I am really good at visual and verbal language, and the order of my information made my presentation effective.

The Cultural Impact of Progress on the Indigenous People

 I have a module (class ) called "Where Did It Come From?" 
This class is about finding out about the "true cost" of the cheap products we buy.
The subjects we do in Where Did It Come From are English(strand - presenting) and Social Studies (strand - economic world).  
For this inquiry, our topic was The Cultural Impact of Progress on the Indigenous People. 

Our teachers came up with a "BIG QUESTION" which is a question that can be broken down into different parts. A "BIG QUESTION" is also a question that you can't google. Our "BIG QUESTION" was: In what ways can I learn about the impact of “progress” on indigenous communities and their environment, in order to better understand how this can be done for mutual benefit.

 Firstly we need to understand the big question. An example of "progress" is the industrial revolution. Many good things happened, like clothing came faster, or you didn't need to wait long to get things you wanted. This made the buying and consumption of goods faster and faster. Because of the high demand of the public, lands were being stripped so they could make bigger factories and produce everything faster. Lots of this land was culturally significant to indigenous people. So there are pros and cons of "progress."

Indigenous people are the original people in that specific area and has been there for generations. 
Mutual benefit means that the action is beneficial for both parties.
So we needed to come up with a way that "progress" could be good for everyone.
Then we broke down our "BIG QUESTION" into 3 subsidiarity questions, or "stepping stone questions". We researched for information to answer these questions to hopefully answer our "BIG QUESTION".
Then we made a presentation on wevideo to show our findings. It's really awesome because our school paid for us to use the premium wevideo. It was so so fun using the wevideo premium because in the previous years in St Mary's didn't have premium and I struggled a little bit sometimes.

Cafe

One of my modules in Campion is Cafe.
In Cafe, we cook and work on visual arts.

We needed to come up with a themed cafe with a menu, name, and idea of a blueprint. 

My theme is books and board games, with themed food from well-known books. We will have board games, books, food, and a fireplace in the cafe, plus lots of comfy chairs like bean bags and hanging egg chairs.

My menu has things like Green Eggs and Ham(Green Eggs and Ham by Dr Seuss), or Turkish Delight(The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis) for "Wizards and Demigods".
Also, there are things for "Muggles and Mortals" like coffee and smoothies(a bit boring) so we don't leave them out.

Because suddenly NZ is in lockdown again, my younger sister and I made Lembas Bread, which is special elvish bread from Lord of the Rings. We used the recipe from https://www.nogarlicnoonions.com/7-dishes-from-famous-books-and-how-to-make-them/.
It was a bit crumbly and hard to roll out so we had to add more melted shortening and golden syrup.

Maths in Nature

 We finished our class MTNA(Maths in Nature).
We learnt about maths in art and nature, like Fibonacci
and the Pythagora's Theorem.
We looked at numerous artists like Franz Marc, Pablo Picasso, and Kandinsky(the one I based my art on).
Kandinsky was an abstract artist who painted with transparent colours and shapes like circles and lines.

Water Footprint

 Millions of people in Africa have to walk about 4 miles there and back just to get contaminated water for their family, while most people can just walk to their tap that flows with clean water.

So in our school, we are doing a Caritas Challenge to know what it feels like in their position by carrying water vessels around the field, except wearing mufti and having prizes.

We took a test on this site called a water calculator that can calculate your water footprint, mine is not so accurate because they didn't have NZ in the country category, so I chose a place from the US.
I reckon you should try this site because it also shows tips on how to save water. I could improve by taking shorter showers and we might get a car that takes up less gasoline.

Staying Cybersafe

 Today in Wellbeing we learned about being Cybersafe.

Phishing - Phishing is when someone tries to get your information through websites and emails. They can convince you to click on ads or enter private information about yourself, account details. 

Cyberbullying - Cyberbullying is when someone might try to hurt your feelings. They might think:
*You don't know me.
*You can't see me
*It's just a joke!
Being online can make it easy for bullies for these reasons.
If you think you are being bullied, tell an adult that you trust and show them evidence.

Hacking - Hacking can be from (meaning to be) jokes, to very serious scenarios. The Russian found a way to hack into a very important person's personal Gmail.

Fashion Through the Decades

  Another of my classes is Fashion through the decades. 
We watched a video and had to choose 1 or 2 decades - which is 10 years.
I'm working with my friend Ciara.
The decades we chose were the 1920s, which is really iconic to me - loose dresses, headwear with feathers, short bobs, lots, and lots of pearls, and beaded necklaces.
Ciara likes the 1940s - Blouses, skirts, hair rolls, and hats. This year reminded me of old-world War II movies.
Another decade that looked like EVERYONE would know which year it was that we didn't choose- the 1980s! Yes, very bright colors and LOTS and LOTS of hairspray for their teased hair (teased hair creates the hairstyle of bedhead). 
But there was one decade I really liked was the 70s for their bright tie-dye.
So our task was to create a bag and hat from the 1915s - to the present day.

Fibonacci

  One of my classes in Campion that I chose was Maths in Nature. I chose this class because wanted to combine something I LOVED(art) and one I didn't love so much(maths). 

Fibonacci is a mathematical sequence that is infinite - spiral. Before Maths in Nature, I had already come across Fibonacci in a book called "The Miscalculations of Lightning" by Stacey McAnulty. It's about a girl who got struck by lightning and is a math genius. 
In the end, it talks about Pi and Fibonacci. 

This is the sequence of Fibonacci: 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89... and on and on. You get the sequence by adding the last 2 numbers.

Weekly Highlights

 Now that I am in Campion, we are going to do Weekly Highlights.
Weekly highlights are when we review this week and this is Week #1.

This week I was proud of catching up on my numeracy homework on Education Perfect - we were doing BEDMAS order of operations (brackets, exponents, division, multiplication, addition, subtraction.) 

My highlight of this week drawing in maths in nature.
The tricky part of the week was sowing everything right in Fashion through the Decades.

Some evidence to show that I am a self-manager is that I ALWAYS catch up on my school/homework.

Some sporting events I participated in and signed up for were netball, dancing, gymnastics, surf live-saving, waka ama, and much much more. And, finally, I joined the Caritas Group.

Hi everybody! My name is Catalina and I am year 7 from Campion College in Gisborne, New Zealand.
My Parents are Filipino but I was born in Gisborne. I've got one younger brother and another younger sister who are still in Primary school (St Mary's). 
My Goals this year for 2021 for extra-curricular, like dance (hip-hop, jazz, ballet), and gymnastics, is to enter more competitions since last year (due to COVID) most of my competitions were cancelled. I also hope to audition for the musical Annie that's going to be in Gisborne.
My hobby is art. Mostly I paint with media like watercolour, acrylic, and a paint pen called Posca.
When I paint with watercolour I use aqua brushes. It's like normal brushes with a water compartment so you don't dip the brush in the water anymore. For Christmas, I got a limited edition Schmincke watercolour set.
I love painting Monstera plants.
